Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge, Concord Unit : Great Meadows is a fresh water wetland near Route 62, about 1 mile outside of Concord Center and 20 miles from downtown Boston.

The birdllife varies from season to season and year to year, depending upon the weather and the water levels, which are controlled by wildlife managers through a system of pumps and pipes. This summer I made several trips to Great Meadows in search of birds to photograph. Most of these shots are of some Great Blue Herons which stalked prey in a man-made ditch very close to the pedestrian trail.

The managers at Great Meadows have been trying to control or eradicate invasive plant species that clog the water, such as water chestnuts and purple loostrife. Although the latter is a nuisance species, I find it beautiful to look at and use as a backdrop for the Great Blue Heron.
