My two trips to Machias Seal Island in Maine last summer were both incredible experiences. For a little over an hour on each excursion, I stood in a wooden blind with a chance to interact with and photograph these birds along with their cousins in the Alcid family, the Razorbill Auks.
In June the puffins were laying and incubating their eggs which were hidden under mud in the rock crevices. In early August, many of the Puffins had departed after their PUFFLINGS had hatched and had grown enough to fly off. The photos of the birds with fish in their bills were all from the August trip, when they were catching herring, flapping the water off their wings and dropping down to give their pufflings a tasty, if not salty meal.
If anyone is either a birder, photographer of any level, or none of the above, I can’t think of a better way to spend the sum of $100.00 for this tour. I took Bold Coast Tours
http://www.boldcoast.com/ out of Cutler Harbor. Andy Patterson provided superb leadership as a skilled naturalist and boat pilot. The tours didn’t end upon leaving Machias Seal Island. On the way back to Cutler, we circled other islands to get closer to several species of seals that live on the rocks.
