Covered Bridges and Scenes, NH-VT Fall 2007 : The foliage was late and choppy in Northern New England this fall. I photographed about 20 covered bridges in 4 days, thanks in part to my new Magellan GPS unit, and the guide "New England's Covered Bridges" by Benjamin and June Evans.

I met several "bridgers" while traipsing around the countryside. One asked me what my favorite bridge was. I'd have to say that each of trip brings it's own favorites. This autumn they were the small-scaled Waterloo Bridge for it's red roof, and the Cilleyville Bridge just because the name is so, uh.......

Vermont & New Hampshire Covered Bridges : I never understood the fascination with the covered bridges that dot the landscapes of rural New England until my recent few trips to New Hampshire and Vermont. Now, after getting to know these bridges I can truly appreciate their beauty and character.

Unlike the steel suspension bridges which I grew up near in N.Y.C. (engineering marvels in their own right) the covered bridges each have their own unique charm. Theyre made from lumber, which like us, ages with time, sometimes gracefully & sometimes not. They can range from a single plank across a creek to the majestic Cornish -Windsor Bridge that traverses the Connecticut River. Some bridges were painted white (to increase visibility to motorists), many are dark red (red pigments were abundant the 1800s) while others are left au naturale, showing off the woods grain.

My greatest challenge in photographing these covered bridges is to resist the impulse to start shooting as soon as I arrive. Instead, I walk around to get a feel for the surrounding foliage, terrain, structures etc. Then its trial and error; lots of shots from different angles, to be sorted out on the computer later.

Also, a detailed state map or GPS system will help you find some of the more remotely located crossings.

Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge MA : My first trip to Mount Auburn Cemetery coincided with my introduction to the world of birding about 15 years ago. It was a well known fact around Boston that Mount Auburn was THE best spot in the area to see migratory songbirds and other species. Of course what I found was that despite being a cemetery, Mt Auburn is a wonderful repository for life of all kinds; it is an arboretum, botanical garden, aviary, home to dens of foxes, and a peaceful playground for two-legged creatures who come to admire the beauty.
