Covered Bridges of New Hampshire and Vermont : Some of my favorite covered bridge images from my trips to Northern New England. I started this in 2006 during my fall vacations. Unlike the more modern bridges, each one of these has its own "personality". Some are tiny and rickety, some are long and majestic. All of them blend in nicely with their surroundings and are appreciated by both residents and tourists alike

Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge MA : My first trip to Mount Auburn Cemetery coincided with my introduction to the world of birding about 15 years ago. It was a well known fact around Boston that Mount Auburn was THE best spot in the area to see migratory songbirds and other species. Of course what I found was that despite being a cemetery, Mt Auburn is a wonderful repository for life of all kinds; it is an arboretum, botanical garden, aviary, home to dens of foxes, and a peaceful playground for two-legged creatures who come to admire the beauty.

Yes, the winter of 2009 was a rough one as snow piled up throughout the Northeast, while losses piled up on Wall Street.

I tried to secure a personal "bailout" from Mr. Geitner but failed. All I wanted was $1100.00, the cost of a round-trip sleeper on Amtrak's Silver Meteor to Florida, a small sum that would "stimulate" the economy of the Everglades. Since this is not a political blog, I won’t speculate as to why I was rejected.

Either way, in keeping with the national spirit of “doing less with less” I skipped my annual trek through the saw-grass, mangrove swamps and beaches of Florida. It turned out well, though, as I found some great birds and landscapes to shoot here in cold New England.

For snowy scenery, I returned to my autumn vacation spot, the Lake Sunapee region of New Hampshire, with side trips to the White Mountains, the Keane area, and Eastern Vermont. The three duck species I shot were all in a small pond in Belmont, about 3 miles from home. It’s conveniently located behind a Pepperidge Farm outlet store; this flock of ducks definitely likes eating day old Jewish Rye.

NEW HAMPSHIRE - VERMONT FALL FOLIAGE 2009 :

The fall colors came early to New England this year. Many leaves had already turned in the Lake Sunapee Region of New Hampshire by the first weekend in October and the climate was quite brisk. This season I began by focusing on farms, towns and bridges up along both sides of the Connecticut River, between Cornish New Hampshire and Randolph, Vermont. As the changing foliage moved southward, I spent more time closer to my base at Northpeak Village in Newbury, New Hampshire, shooting scenes around Warner, Sunapee and down to Contoocook. The weather has gotten more spring-like after the foliage season. Maybe it will it will stay this way for a while. Meanwhile, here's some of what I saw when the air was cold but the colors were warm.
